For years, getting a website meant one thing: paying a designer a lump sum and getting a finished site handed over. Today, more small businesses are choosing monthly website plans instead, a bit like leasing a van rather than buying one outright.
Neither is automatically better. Here's how to work out which suits your business.
How a one-off build works
You agree a price, pay it (often half up front and half on completion), and the site is built and launched. After that, you either look after it yourself or pay separately for hosting, updates and changes.
Pros
- You own the site outright once it's paid for.
- No ongoing commitment if you're happy to manage it yourself.
- Can work out cheaper over many years, if you genuinely need very few changes.
Cons
- A significant upfront cost at a time when cash flow often matters most.
- Hosting, domain, security updates and changes are usually extra.
- Sites that nobody maintains go stale: old prices, broken forms, out-of-date software.
How a monthly website plan works
You pay a fixed amount each month that covers the design and build, plus hosting, your domain, SSL, a set amount of update time and support. There's usually no setup fee.
Pros
- No big upfront bill. A professional site from a predictable monthly cost.
- Updates, security and hosting are included, so the site stays current.
- One person to call when you need a change.
- Easy to upgrade as your business grows.
Cons
- You're paying for as long as you use it.
- The design is usually licensed rather than owned while the plan is active, so check the cancellation terms.
The questions that decide it
- How often will your site need changing? If you regularly update prices, services, photos or offers, a plan with update time included is usually better value.
- Do you have the cash up front? If the money is better spent on stock, tools or a van, spreading the cost makes sense.
- Will you look after it yourself? Be honest. Security updates and backups aren't optional.
- What happens if you leave? A good monthly plan keeps your domain in your name and gives you a fair way to take the site with you.
How I do it
Most of my clients choose a monthly plan: the Basic Website at R499/month or the Professional Website at R999/month. Both include hosting, SSL, your .co.za domain, monthly updates and support, with no setup fee and no long contract.
Your domain is always registered in your name. If you cancel and want to keep the site itself, you can buy it outright for the balance of 12 months of your plan, minus what you've already paid. After a year, there's nothing to pay. That way the monthly plan is never a trap.
For bigger projects, like online shops, booking systems or 15+ pages, the Corporate Custom Design is a quoted build from R25,000, with Website Maintenance at R499/month once it's live. So you get the best of both: a bespoke site you own, kept properly looked after.
Still not sure? Pick "not sure" on the start form and I'll recommend the right option for your business, with no upselling.
